Head of the Municipal Green Structure Division of Porto City Council
São Roque Park is a true “green lung” in the eastern part of the city, offering a space of leisure and tranquillity to its visitors. Originally known as Quinta da Lameira, this former property of the aristocratic Cálem family stands out for its gardens designed by the remarkable landscape gardener Jacinto de Matos. Acquired by the Municipality of Porto at the end of the 1970s, the park still preserves historical and natural features, the most interesting being the Labyrinth of Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens), one of the park’s trademark images, as well as the Camellia Garden, where you can admire magnificent centenary specimens of Camellia japonica. The São Roque Palace, a striking example of Porto’s stately homes, is now the “Casa São Roque – Centro de Arte”, an important cultural center in the city.
On the upper level of the park are the children’s playground and sports areas, which connect to the new “urban forest” area. This “urban forest” area, on a ridge, invites you to stroll along the meandering paths, shaped by the natural topography of the land, culminating in viewpoints with breathtaking views over the River Douro, which surprise and delight those who pass by.
