We are pleased to invite you to the 1st Porto Urban Greening Biennal!
On October 17th and 18th, 2024, at the Eng. António de Almeida Foundation in Porto, we will discuss the current and future challenges of Urban Green Infrastructure installation and management – a key strategy to address the climate emergency and foster environmental justice, social cohesion, and integration.
The theme of this first edition is Planting the Living City, and we are honored to have a renowned panel of invited speakers, including Joan Nassauer, Nigel Dunnet, Claudia West, Noel Kingsbury, Martí Franch, Paulo Farinha Marques, Duarte Mata, and María Sánchez-Blanco.
The program also includes the presentation of innovative and inspiring urban greening projects, workshops, and guided tours of Porto’s parks and gardens.
We designed this conference for you and hope you make the most of this event, which will represent an exceptional opportunity for knowledge exchange and promoting collaborations.

I have been working for the Madrid City Council in urban tree management since 1994. Currently, I ́m in charge of the tree evaluation and review service (SERVER). This service aims to find out the state of the trees from the point of view of risk, through inspection and evaluation, as well as the analysis of branch and tree failures that occur in the city of Madrid.

Franch has imparted lectures in the 5 continents and been visiting teacher at ENSPV Versailles, RMIT Melbourne, Wellington, Santiago de Chile, Cape Town among others.
In the last decade EMF has contributed to re-naturalization of the city of Barcelona with some innovative projects such: Superblocks (C/Girona), Pi i Margall and Rambla Carmell green axis, Can Framis urban forest, Mar Bella Waterfront, 3 Turons, at different stages of execution.

Nigel Dunnett is Professor of Planting Design and Urban Horticulture in the Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield and is one of the world’s leading voices on innovative approaches planting design. He is a pioneer of the new ecological and sustainable approaches to gardens, landscapes, and public spaces. His work revolves around the integration of ecology and horticulture to achieve low-input but high-impact landscapes that are dynamic, diverse, and tuned to nature.
Nigel’s work is based on decades of detailed experimental work, delivering a wide range of innovative approaches to achieving transformational and multifunctional urban greening. His work has had widespread application in practice and has been widely applied in the UK and abroad.

Noel Kingsbury

Gardening and planting designer, writer and teacher
Noel Kingsbury is internationally known as an designer, innovator, writer and teacher in the fields of gardening and planting design. His 'New Perennial Garden' of 1994 helped launch the current wave of interest in naturalistic planting design. His doctorate in 2007 with the Landscape Department at Sheffield University, looked at the long-term performance of perennials, a research field he has continued with, along with a series of workshops to disseminate the findings to practitioners.
Kingsbury has published around 25 books, including editing a volume on the culture and politics of gardening. He currently co-runs gardenmasterclass.org as a global education portal, along with a sister organisation in Poland and academiapaisaje.org for the Spanish-speaking world; a Portuguese organisation is in the planning stage. After having gardened in the west of England for many years he is currently making an experimental low-irrigation garden in central Portugal.

Paulo Farinha Marques is a Landscape Architect and Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal.
He graduated in Landscape Architecture from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia of the University of Lisbon (1988), obtained his PhD in Landscape Architecture from the Faculty of Architectural Studies - University of Sheffield, United Kingdom (1999) and took his habilitation exams at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (2023).
His main areas of interest are the design of green outdoor spaces for public use, urban biodiversity and vegetation in the landscape. He is responsible for managing the Campo Alegre Botanical Park, which includes the University of Porto Botanical Garden.

Pedro Calaza-Martínez. PhD in Landscape Architecture from the University of Lisbon and PhD in Agricultural Engineering from the USC. Dean of the Official College of Agricultural Engineers of Galicia, President of Spanish Association of Public Parks and Gardens, Director of Galician School of Landscape, and vice president of the Galician Engineering Council. Collaborator of the WG7 of urban and peri-urban forests of FAO.
He develops his professional work as senior consultant in planning, design and management of urban green infrastructure. He complements his activity as a researcher and professor of landscape architecture. He has published articles and books and lectured in different countries. Director of Norma Granada (Spanish official Tree Appraisal Method) and the “Santander Charter” of the AEPJP and Director of the Green Infrastructure Guide of “Spanish Federation of Municipalities and provinces”.
His prizes include: Cecil Konijnendijk Award for Outstanding Research on Urban Forestry and Urban Greening (2022), 46º San Miguel National Prize of Agrarian Book (2017) for his work “Green infrastructure. Natural health system” and Juan Julio National Award (2012): “Woodland risk assessment: principles, indicators and methods”.
