Founder Caminhos do Ocidente. Director of The International Camellia Society - Portugal Region
Located in Porto, this foundation was created in 1969 by the will of its founder, António de Almeida. Opened to the public in 1973, since then it has promoted an intense cultural programme, focusing on literature, art, education and science, organizing meetings, conferences, debates, exhibitions and concerts.
The project to extend the garden of Eng. António de Almeida’s residence, dating from 1937, was designed by Jacinto de Matos, a prominent gardener from Porto.
In the garden of the Foundation, plants and statues coexist and intertwine with the history of the place. Among camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons, musicians, archangels and gargoyles, visitors are invited to contemplate the Foundation’s garden, appreciating the beauty of the plants and statuary that compose the landscape.
