The City Park

Sidónio Pardal

Author of the Porto City Park

In 1916/1918, Ezequiel Campos insisted on acquiring land to build a park. In the 1960s, Robert Auzelle’s urbanization plan set aside this land, but it wasn’t until 1982 that the first conceptual studies began. Continued construction began in 1991, with a project by landscape architect Sidónio Pardal. With around 80 hectares, Porto City Park is considered the largest urban park in the country. The naturalized green areas unfold in multiple panoramic fields that stretch as far as the Atlantic Ocean, giving it a particularity that is rare in the world.

The City Park is home to several habitats that are home to a great diversity of plants and animals. The flora is very rich, with 159 species of trees and shrubs, both exotic such as the plane tree, metrosiderum or camellias, and native, such as the oak, pine, hawthorn or yellow lily. The proximity to the sea as well as the lakes and small ponds encourage a diversity of birds, with more than 18 species identified, and amphibians, such as the newt and the green frog. Although more difficult to observe, the park is also home to many micro-mammals such as the wood rat and the hedgehog.
